Another "oldie but goodie" that was first widely used by the strongmen of the 1950s for a portable free-form device to exercise the upper body.
This device is perfect for finishing off an upper lats, traps, and rear delt workout by setting up spring tension so that the user may do 3 sets of 30-50 reps to burn the muscles involved to dramatically bring out the striations ("cuts"). Because of the freedom of movement aspect, the user can really get creative with the angle and thus, emphasis on the various targeted muscles. Pulls may be performed with elbows elevated or lowered. Or, pulling with one arm at a time with the opposite elbow tucked into the side. Front delts may be worked by using the device in a vertical configuration while pulling straight up on the top handle. The possibilities are endless.
Working against the progressive resistance of springs closely mimics the natural progressive force/angle strength curve of the muscles involved.
Tension is adjusted by hooking 1 to 5 springs between the handle grips. A single spring is light enough tension for women, children, or elderly. Using all 5 springs requires much strength to perform the exercise movement fully - and, for multiple sets.
